Hello! I am currently a sophomore student studying BA Speech Communication, I just transferred from UPLB BA Communication Arts program, but I wasn't able to apply in CMC because of the number of freshmen students that they accepted. I thought I was fine in my current program, but I figured out that dreams cannot be replaced. I applied for the BA Communication Research and Journalism program, and I could say that both interviews went well. My dilemma is, if ever I get accepted on both, which one would I pursue?
I used a certain marketing framework to expound on this conflict.
Truth: I always wanted to be in media particularly in Journalism
Motivation: I have been a campus journ since Grade 5 and the feeling of telling a story is just I think, for me.
Tension: But the media is a toxic field filled with violence and corruption.
another one:
Truth: I want to shift to Comm Res
Motivation: Because it has a wider scope that creates more opportunities that will positively develop my potentials for the future
Tension: But I still have some echoing desire to be in Journalism, I am not a total fan of writing research (but I love it kung babasahin ko lang) that may lead to my incapability to handle the course.
Plus, with Comm Res, I am sure to be delayed by another year, pero sa Journ may chance ako to graduate in time. I believe Journ is a not so flexible program, but it is something that I am really passionate about and I could say that it perfectly fits me. However, looking at the curriculum, it seems to be undefined because of the number of electives, while Communication Research offers a more secured avenue of learning specific set of skills that any industry is looking for, and which may eventually pave way for me to enter media with an edge.
To sum it up, I think Journ would limit my opportunities despite it being my passion, while Comm Res would equip me with the sufficient skills to go beyond what I want to do, pero at the same time, pwede pa rin naman ako pumasok sa media ng may mas edge dahil sa research skills (sa tingin ko lang).
I would really love to get everyone's insight on the matter, especially those who studied in any of the two programs/are now working in different fields.
Thank you!
